Production Lights the Stage

Degrees in the Valley of Boston would not be possible without the Production Staff. These men create sets from scratch by building, painting, and adorning whatever is needed.

The Valley of Boston Production Staff are the “men behind the scenes,” who use their skills and attributes to bring each Scottish Rite Degree to life. Their lighting expertise highlights the stage action, while the audio technicians ensure that everyone is heard. For every actor, there must be a spotlight. For every effect, there must be a sound. For every Degree, there must be a Production Staff.

Under the direction of the Production Manager (a professional in the theatre industry), the staff (comprised of Valley members) works with each of the four bodies to realize the vision of each Degree Director, and to bring that vision from concept to reality.

"Behind the Scenes" - March 8th

“What does it take to put on a Scottish Rite Degree?” That is the question Boston Lafayette Lodge of Perfection has been answering for years.

Perfection degrees need a cast that runs from only two actors, to 55 or more. The number of cast members can vary as each major speaking and non-speaking role needs an understudy. Most of the degrees are also enhanced by additional crowds, guards, or tribesmen.

The Lodge of Perfection is in a constant role of recruitment for new workers due to Scottish Rite Masons’ busy schedules in assuming leadership roles in the Fraternity, and the demands of life, family and business. Shortly after a Valley degree day, the Lodge sends out an invitational letter, to inform and recruit new workers for Perfection degrees. The informational session, “Behind the Scenes”, will be held on Saturday, March 8th at Grand Lodge with the day beginning at 9 AM and concluding at 1 PM

Scottish Rite Building Closes Its Doors

Is that a headline you want to see in your lifetime? Some Scottish Rite Masons in Fort Scott, Kansas have closed their building, and are dealing with this reality as we speak.

“The organization has ceased to grow,” the representative for the Valley of Fort Scott said. “We can’t afford [the building] anyway.”

The decision was certainly appropriate for this Valley given the circumstances it was facing. No organization should maintain a property that is hemorrhaging funds.

Insinuating the lack of funds to support the building arose because the Valley only has 800 members whose average age is close to 80, though, paints a less optimistic picture for us of the Craft.

What happens to us when we convince ourselves that we “have ceased to grow?” What does our future hold? Many of us don’t want to think about that possibility.

Losing a building is not tragic. Losing a fraternity with the history the Craft has would be. If we admit we are no longer capable of growing in size again, we might as well give up now. The loss of the fraternity as we know it will be an inevitable eventuality.
